Marrapinti - Yukultji Napangati

In Marrapinti, Yukultji Napangati maps the sacred site west of the Pollock Hills, a place of profound ancestral significance for the women of her Pintupi community. The site is tied to epic Tjukurrpa (Dreaming) narratives in which groups of ancestral women camped as they travelled east, gathering bush foods and performing ceremonies.

Napangati’s painting is distinguished by her intricate networks of fine lines and shimmering fields of dots. These rhythmic patterns convey both the physical features of the desert—its sandhills, rockholes, and shifting light—and the ceremonial energy embedded within the land. The concentric motifs at the heart of the composition mark the rockholes at Marrapinti, sources of water and vitality in an otherwise arid expanse.
