This painting centres on Tjuntulpul, a claypan site to the east of Kiwirrkura. In this work Yakari Napaltjarri depicts the claypans and flat basins that hold water after rain, which when reading the work from above, becomes a map of how the Country gathers water.
The story here is a women’s story. At Tjuntulpul, groups of women came together to sing the songs and perform the dances for this place, keeping law and memory active. They also collected bush foods, berries and seeds found in the swales and on the margins of the claypan, linking ceremony with the everyday work of caring for Country. In this work Napaltjarri shares this knowledge: the site, its forms, and the actions that belong to it, while deeper cultural details remain with custodians.
