Lorrkon (Hollow Log) - Samson Bonson

A Lorrkon, or hollow log coffin, is one of the most culturally significant sculptural forms from Arnhem Land in the Northern Territory. Traditionally used in mortuary ceremonies, the Lorrkon forms part of a secondary burial process in which the bones of the deceased are placed within the hollowed trunk of a tree. Painted with clan designs and ceremonial imagery, these works are not only vessels of remembrance, but also powerful expressions of Country, identity and spiritual continuity.

In contemporary practice, artists such as SAMSON BONSON continue this tradition through works made for a wider audience, translating deep cultural knowledge into sculptural form. Bonson, a Gurrgoni artist from West Arnhem Land, is known for his finely worked surfaces and controlled, intricate mark-making. His Lorrkon are distinguished by their careful balance of form and detail, where the natural structure of the hollow log is animated through rhythmic patterning and subtle shifts in tone.

While no longer created for ceremonial use, Bonson’s Lorrkon retain a strong connection to their cultural origins. The painted surface often references ancestral narratives, Country and the enduring presence of spirit within the landscape. The verticality of the form itself speaks to transformation and passage, echoing its original purpose while existing today as a sculptural object of quiet authority.
