Richard Moketarinja’s watercolours depict the dramatic landscape of his Western Arrernte Country in Central Australia. Mountains, rocky ranges, riverbeds and stands of ghost gums are carefully observed, capturing the changing colours and distinctive light of the desert.
As an artist of the Hermannsburg School, Moketarinja worked in the watercolour tradition established at Ntaria (Hermannsburg), while painting a landscape to which he held a deep cultural and personal connection. His works are not simply views of the Central Australian environment, but representations of Country — a living landscape shaped by ancestral stories, knowledge and generations of connection to place.
