Yumari and Winparrku - Mitjili Gibson Napanangka

Mitjili describes Wirnparrku as not being a low-down-place but a high-up-place where they could climb up and defend themselves. Mitjili's father travelled through this country extensively, at the time, Mitjili's father had four wives. While travelling through the cliffs the family group was attacked by "spearmen." throwing spears from the edge of the cliffs. Mitjili's father was killed at this site.
When Mitjili's mother was speared she had been swearing at the men. This must have been over something very serious.
This painting contains a warning story also. It tells of an incestuous relationship, or a "wrong skin" relationship between a father and a daughter. A baby was born out of this wrong way union, the consequences being that the baby and the mother were killed and the father was speared to death. Mitjili says that when she is painting and thinking about places and the stories associated with them she thinks "This contains a sacred story. I had better leave this alone and jutupungka: I cover it up".
