Wilkinkarra – Wala Wala depicts Country at Wilkinkarra (Lake Mackay) during a time of wala wala, heavy rain, when the normally dry salt lake is transformed by water and movement. This rare and powerful moment brings renewal to the land and activates ancestral presence embedded within the landscape through Jukurrpa (Dreaming).
Viewed from an aerial perspective, the painting traces the spread and pooling of water across the vast lakebed. Dense, rhythmic patterning evokes rainclouds, flowing water and the saturation of Country as the lake fills. The surface is charged with energy, reflecting both the physical force of the rain and its deeper cultural significance in the Western Desert, where water sustains life, ceremony and memory.
