Wilkinkarra - Mitjili Gibson Napanangka

Painted in 2000, Wilkinkarra is among the first works Napanangka produced after beginning her painting practice. At this early stage, her visual language was already defined by clarity and structure. The composition is anchored by rhythmic mark-making and controlled fields of colour, establishing the formal qualities that would continue to shape her later work.

While her practice would grow in scale and complexity over the following years, this painting demonstrates the strength of her instinct from the outset. There is no sense of experimentation for its own sake. Instead, the work presents a confident and resolved approach to surface, repetition, and spatial rhythm, marking the beginning of a significant and sustained contribution to Western Desert painting.
