Parrailpit - Mitjili Gibson Napanangka

Parralpit is a site on Napanangka’s Country in the Western Desert, a place held in memory through family journeys and the movements of people across the desert landscape. Like many of the places she paints, Parralpit carries layers of personal history as well as ancestral presence. It is a place known through travel, hunting, and the rhythms of life lived on Country before settlement.

In this work, Napanangka evokes the landscape from an aerial perspective. Networks of finely worked lines and clustered marks suggest the subtle patterns of sandhills, vegetation, and the pathways that connect one site to another. The surface carries a quiet sense of movement, recalling the ways people travelled between water sources and ceremonial places across the desert.
