Lots of Water all Over - Mitjili Gibson Napanangka

The impetus for this series arose from helicopter journeys undertaken by Napanangka in 2008 to identify and revisit sacred sites across her traditional Country. These flights were not simply acts of mapping, but of return. From the air, the contours of Country revealed places bound to memory, ceremony, and family history.

For Napanangka, the experience was deeply emotional. She revisited sites where both of her parents were speared, locations that remain charged with ancestral presence and personal grief. The journeys also stirred memories of hunting with her sisters as a young girl, travelling across Country in search of food and sustenance.

These works carry that convergence of past and present. They are not aerial landscapes in a descriptive sense, but embodied recollections of place. Country is seen from above, yet felt from within.
