Maggie Green was born and grew up at Myroodah Station, approximately 100 kilometres south of Derby in Western Australia’s Kimberley region. Nearby Kunmunya (Port George IV), a former Presbyterian Aboriginal mission, was a place where Maggie and her family would camp on weekends.
Like many Aboriginal people from the late 1940s, Maggie’s family lived and worked on pastoral stations, where life revolved around family, Country, and community despite the restrictions imposed at the time.
In this work, Maggie reflects on childhood memories through a semi-abstract aerial view of significant sites, including the Myroodah Station school, dormitories, garden, church, and dam. Figures embedded in the landscape recall key people from her early life — her mother and grandmother, station manager Mick Lannigan, his daughter and Maggie’s teacher Mary Lannigan, and friends with whom she would often “run amok”.
