Red Tails Over Uttumpatu depicts Kukula McDonald’s Country around Uttumpatu, the rocky outcrops that form the ridgelines and hills beside the community of Papunya.

McDonald is a Luritja artist who has painted with Bindi Mwerre Anthurre Artists in Alice Springs since 2002. Over this time, she has developed a highly distinctive and immediately recognisable painting style, with the red-tailed black cockatoo becoming one of her most enduring subjects.

McDonald knows where to find the “big mobs” of red-tailed black cockatoos across the Central and Western Deserts. In her paintings they gather in trees, chatter amongst themselves or move across the open sky, their flashes of red bringing movement and life to the landscape.
