Kanpi - Knmanara 'Nellie' Stewart

In Kanpi, Nellie Stewart paints her home community in the APY Lands through the Minyma Kutjara Tjukurpa (Two Women Creation Line), one of the most important narratives of her Country. The story tells of two sisters who were separated in childhood when a powerful wind blew the younger far to the south. The elder sister set out to find her, eventually bringing her back to their own Country. Along the way, she taught her sister songs, dances, and knowledge of the land, ensuring that ceremony and culture were passed on. Their return journey is remembered through a series of significant sites, including Wana Wani, a shallow waterholding formed when the sisters cast their wana (digging stick) across the ground.

Stewart’s work translates this ancestral journey into a painterly language that is immediately recognisable. Her compositions are marked by open fields of colour and gestural brushstrokes, evoking both the desert terrain and the paths traced by the sisters. The movement of the brush across the surface can be read as an echo of footsteps, tracks, or marks in sand, linking her own creative act to the physical memory of Country.

Though she came to painting later in life, Stewart developed a distinctive and confident style that embedded cultural narratives within a contemporary visual form. In Kanpi, the balance of narrative depth and painterly lightness demonstrates her capacity to hold story and innovation together.
