Jorna Newberry is the nephew of the late senior artist and law man Yannima Tommy Watson, one of the most influential figures to emerge from the Western Desert. This close family relationship places Newberry within a powerful lineage of cultural knowledge, responsibility and artistic authority, passed down through kinship rather than taught formally.

Growing up in close connection to Tommy Watson, Newberry inherited not only stories of Country but an understanding of how knowledge is held, respected and expressed. His work reflects this inheritance, carrying forward the strength, confidence and cultural grounding that defined his uncle’s practice, while finding its own voice and rhythm.
