In Moving Out, Moving On, 2004, Danie Mellor uses the familiar language of decorative ceramics to explore ideas of place, movement and cultural history. Created in underglaze on slip-cast earthenware, the work reflects Mellor’s longstanding interest in the ways objects can carry histories and how European traditions of collecting, display and representation have shaped understandings of Australian land and culture.
Mellor frequently draws upon the visual language of colonial-era ceramics and domestic decorative wares, reworking forms historically associated with European taste and refinement. By bringing these traditions into dialogue with his own connections to the rainforest Country of Far North Queensland, Mellor unsettles the distinction between decorative object and historical document. The ceramic surface becomes a space in which different cultural perspectives and histories can coexist.
The title, Moving Out, Moving On, suggests transition and departure, while also carrying a sense of looking back. Within Mellor’s broader practice, such ideas resonate with histories of displacement, changing relationships to Country, and the movement of cultural objects and knowledge between places. Made early in Mellor’s career, the work demonstrates his distinctive use of ceramics to reconsider Australian histories through objects that are at once beautiful, familiar and culturally complex.
