Minyma Makuli Tjukurpa - Carolanne Ken

Carolanne paints her dreaming, Minma Malilu which was passed down to her through her maternal grandmother. Marliu is an ancestral figure and the large roundels represent the cave of Minyma Malilu.

Many of the caves and sacred rock holes in the region remain as important ceremony sites for the people that still live a semi traditional life in their homelands. Carolanne's painting designs are associated with creation stories and contain important information helping to preserving these important elements of aboriginal culture.

This is the artists country around Kanpi in the Pitjantjatjara lands. It is the home and story for the woman (Minyma) creation ancestor called Marlilu. Marlilu travelled all around collecting wild foods and was sitting in her cave with her collecting bowl and digging stick with the wild foods she’s collected – like bush raisins and snake vines. Lots of wild foods. It is also home to the emu (Kalaya) and the country has a lot of creeks too. The Kalaya food is plentiful – they also eat the small stones they gather from the creek bed. This is important country with strong dreaming stories for my father and our family.
