Wandjina - Artist Once Known

Wandjina are ancestral beings and powerful creators in the mythology of the Kimberley region in Western Australia. Recognised by their halo-like headdresses, mouthless faces, and large, staring eyes, they are said to control the weather—particularly rain, lightning and clouds-and continue to watch over Country and its people.

Traditionally worn by men during ceremony, engraved pearl shells (riji) are prized objects of personal adornment, exchange, and spiritual significance. The reflective surface of the pearl shell evokes water, sky, and spirit—elements inseparable from the Wandjina’s domain.
