Carol Puruntatameri

"Ngarukuruwala Kapi Murrakupuni means ‘we sing to the land’ - a practice that invites our ancestors to watch over us and guide us as we gather ochre, bark, and other materials. Our paintings are like our songs to country, just as we call out and sing to our ancestors when we visit the land. Carol Puruntatameri is from Yermalner (Melville Island) in the Tiwi Islands, Northern Territory, Australia. Growing up within a family deeply immersed in ceremony and art, Puruntatameri's understanding of Tiwi painting was shaped from an early age by her uncle, the respected artist Justine Puruntatameri, who taught her and other family members at Munupi Arts. She was also influenced by her father, who painted Pukumani poles and participated in Kulama ceremonies, including the traditional body painting he performed using a mirror.

Puruntatameri vividly recalls her childhood experiences of ceremony: "Our fathers told all us girls: 'Go down and cut sticks from mangroves to use in the ceremony.' The sticks were put in a circle around the middle circle and the men go out and collect the Kulama (bush yam). We were all there, all my family, when our fathers were doing Kulama ceremony." These formative experiences underpin her artistic practice, which draws directly from the ceremonial life, ancestral stories and cultural knowledge of the Tiwi people.

Although surrounded by art and cultural practice throughout her life, Puruntatameri only began painting in recent years. Her practice emerged through observing and learning from her father and other senior family members, before developing into a distinctive body of work that combines intricate Tiwi designs with natural ochres on bark. Her paintings embody the spiritual and cultural narratives of Tiwi ceremony while reflecting a deep respect for the traditions she has inherited. She is also a passionate advocate for the preservation of Tiwi cultural heritage, expressing a vision to establish a museum at Munupi Arts to safeguard important ceremonial objects, including clap sticks and Tokoinga—ceremonial balls made from beeswax and feathers—for future generations.

Despite being an emerging artist, Puruntatameri's work has quickly gained national recognition. She was selected as a finalist in the Telstra National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Awards in both 2025 and 2026, and in 2026 was also named a finalist in the prestigious Wynne Prize. These significant achievements reflect the strength of her practice and mark her as an important emerging voice in contemporary Tiwi art.
